Frequently Asked Questions

Q.  What are Curly Horses used for?

A.  Curly horses are used for all types of equestrian activities.  There is a wide range of body types represented in the Curly breed, which enables people to find the perfect Curly horse for their needs.

Q.  Is it true that Curly horses should not be vaccinated or wormed?

A.  Some people believe that Curly horses should not be vaccinated against common equine illnesses. The reason for this being that some  people think Curlies have a superior immune system and that vaccinating them could cause a bad reaction, possibly death.  Most people do vaccinate their Curlies and have no more incidences of unfavorable reactions than any other breed of horse. Curly horses do benefit from basic health care, such as vaccinations and regular de-worming.

Q.  I have heard that Curlies do not need shoeing. Is this true?

A.  Most Curly horses have very strong, hard hooves. It is not uncommon for them to be able to go without shoes. Some Curlies will need to have shoes depending on the terrain they are being ridden over. This should be evaluated on individual basis. All Curlies benefit from regular hoof care performed by a qualified person.

Q.  Are Curly horses really hypo-allergenic?

A.  Many people have come to the Curly breed to be free of their allergy problems found with other breeds. Although not scientifically proven, most allergic  people have little or no reaction to Curly horses. There is currently research being performed in Europe testing the validity of this claim. If you have severe allergies, please have medical supervision when "test sniffing" these horses.

Q.  I have heard that Curly horses are very calm. Does this mean they are lazy too?

A.  No. While Curly horses do have exceptionally pleasant dispositions, they are in no way lazy or "dead". Curlies tend to be willing partners that posses a forward walk and a ground covering trot and canter.

Q.  I found a Curly I would like to buy, but he is in another state. Now what?

A.  As Curly horses are still a rare breed, often you will have to look out of your immediate area for a suitable horse. There are many commercial horse shipping companies (found in the classified section of most any major equine magazine) that can help you get your new horse home. These horses take the trailer rides well and generally suffer no ill effects of being transported long distances. Most companies will be happy to give you a quote on the cost of shipping.
