*Curly Sally

Hmmmm, what can I say about Sally?  Well, she is without a doubt one of my  favorite mares. When I first saw pictures of Sally she lived in Kentucky at one of my more favorite breeder's farms. She came up for sale and while I was interested I didn't have the money to buy her at the time and she was snatched up by another lady in no time flat. Ah well, so it goes. But I never forgot about her.

Two years later, Sally's owner listed her for sale. Again I was interested but again, had no spare money available to go shopping with.. Time passed and Sally remained for sale.. Eventually I couldn't stand it any longer and sent an inquiry to her owner asking if she might be interesting in a lease/payment plan.. YES!! The arrangements were made and Sally was on her way in a matter of weeks.. I couldn't have been more excited. There is just something about this mare that speaks to me.. and somehow I knew when I first saw her pictures (way long many years ago), that she had a place in my heart and in my stable.

When Sally arrived she was a bit cranky at being shipped all the way across the country and decided that I should be the one punished. She wouldn't come to me in her stall, she wouldn't let me catch her in the field and she just gave me the "eye" whenever I came around.. But in no time at all, she came to see that in fact I was one of her biggest admirers.. She started to come up to the stall door for hugs and kisses (She has without a doubt one of the most "kissable" horse noses I have ever met.). She would meet me in the fields and her eye went from glaring to soft. Sally and I had become good friends.

Like many of my mares, Sally is broke to ride, even though she was purchased to be primarily a broodmare.. Since Sally is so darned wide, when we do ride her we ride her bareback.. One day  we decided to try her in an indian war bridle.. basically just a rope looped around her lower jaw and chin. LOL. that was a fun day. Sally tried to spit the rope out at first but then got used to it and was very pleasant to ride about in this manner..

In March we took Sally to the regional equine expo as part of our breed display.. As far as I know Sally has never been to an event off of the farm before. This was her first show type event and she did fabulously. She was courteous and friendly to the public and as you can see, hardly excited by all the fuss going on around her.

Sally holds a big spot in my breeding herd as she is wonderfully conformed, possesses great movement and has a disposition of gold, not to mention a very "kissable" nose.

Sally has pulled off quite the coup.. She is wintering (indefinatly) at the Bridge Creek School of Equine Massage, where she is THE lady of the farm. The only mare amidst 4 adoring geldings, she is treated to the best of an all natural lifestyle (no drugs or chemicals on this place) AND is going to be one of the lucky "school" horses used during massage class. How can you beat that one.

Update: Sally is home from the massage school after 2 yrs of pampering.. We are thrilled to have her home and plan to breed her to our young stallion  Harley in the spring of 2008!
