About Us!

Windy K Curlies is located in the rolling hills of the Willamette Valley in Northwestern Oregon. We have 44 acres of pasture and forest land that my husband Jim and I  are privileged to own and enjoy.

The Curly operation started one day when my young son (then 3) went racing down the barn aisle and spooked the horse (a TB) that I was working with. Of course the kid got "yelled at" about the hazards of running around high strung horses and he promptly wanted to go home, out of the barn (who can blame him, it is no fun getting yelled at!). It occurred to me that if I wanted to spend time in the barn with my kids, that I needed some horses that would lend themselves to the unpredictability's of children. I had always been intrigued by the Curly horses, ever since I read about them as a horse starved 10 yr old.  So  I set out on a journey to find some Curlies and bring them home.

It didn't take long to find out that Curlies are not a commonly found breed of horse and I would have to look far and wide for my desired horses. This gave me the idea of beginning to breed some. My step daughter Sarah was just entering high school and was eager to participate in this new venture and the little kids were of course thrilled to hear we would have curly foals to play with! In any case, it wasn't long before there was a stallion and 4 mares roaming my pastures alongside our original collection of Thoroughbreds and other riding horses.

I have spent the last 7 years examining my goals and refining my direction that I am taking with my breeding program. I have always been attracted to the sporthorse type of equine, something that excels in the areas of jumping, dressage and eventing. I have put together a nice herd of larger, athletic Curly mares to cross with my wonderful, homebred  Curly stallion *Troy. Additionally, I will be using some outstanding quality Warmblood stallions to bring in added height, movement and ability to my lines. I am very excited to see how my breeding program progresses over the next few years.

As time has passed I have found my way into the "new" and exciting world of natural hoof care.. It seemed to mesh perfectly with my horses and my outlook on life. Taking these wonderful natural horses and helping them to achieve the ultimate hoof form and function naturally, without shoes and traditional farrier methods has been a great thing. I am enrolled in the AANHCP certification program and am out helping more horses to better health on a daily basis.
